In 1638, due to famine and oppression against Catholics, Japan experienced the Shimabara Rebellion. The Tokugawa shogunate sent an army of 120,000 to suppress the rebellion, significantly defeating the Shimabara forces led by Amakusa Shirō Tenshō (played by Yōsuke Nakaizumi). Famous for his sorcery, Amakusa caused chaos in the shogunate's ranks before his demise. Years later, during a hunt, Tokugawa Ieyasu's third son, the uncle of the current shogun, and known as the Dragon of the South Sea, Tokugawa Yoshinobu encountered the resurrected Amakusa and his maid (played by Kumiko Aso).
