A classic gangster film starring James Cagney. In this brilliantly acted representative work, he plays the psychopathic thug Cody Jarrett, who has a severe Oedipus complex. He abandons his wife like a madman and goes on a rampage committing crimes everywhere. The police exert tremendous effort to capture him, while he leads his gang of thugs hiding in the mountains, confronting the police. Director Raoul Walsh includes many atmospheric violent action scenes in the film, but what stands out even more is the vivid portrayal of the male protagonist's paranoia. Margaret Wycherly's evil mother and Virginia Mayo's femme fatale also deliver equally impressive performances, culminating in a profoundly moving tragic ending.
