The expressive psychology between two young women leads to one of them being victimized, with the killer being the other girl. Afterward, she is imprisoned in a monastery. The inspector comes to investigate, and the lawyer also comes to look into the case. However, the inspector is not the same one who appears at the beginning and end of the film, and the lawyer is the same as the victim. Therefore, whether this murder case actually occurred and whether it was really the work of this killer remains uncertain. It requires the audience to think for themselves. This film is written and directed by Alain Robbe-Grillet, following "Last Year at Marienbad," and is his first color film. The framework of the film is very simple. The film contrasts contemporary psychological perversion with medieval psychological perversion within the monastery, thereby emphasizing the historical depth of the issue. However, the author does not express his own attitude toward the issues explored; he merely presents them objectively. Formally, the film employs purification methods, resulting in a neutral and abstract temporal and spatial quality in the visuals. There is very little dialogue, and no subtlety, as meaning is conveyed solely through visuals, color, and the visual effects of editing. The film shares thematic similarities with "Last Year at Marienbad," but with less environmental influence and more emphasis on human nature, making it even more abstract. In terms of intent, this film bears some resemblance to "Last Year at Marienbad" and can serve as a reference for one another. Viewing this film in relation to others can provide a more complete understanding of Alain Robbe-Grillet's thought and style.
