This film is based on a true story. The narrative tells the gripping tale of Francis (played by François Leterrier), a man sentenced to death, and how he successfully escapes from prison in the hours leading up to his execution. To escape from a Nazi prison, Francis devises a seamless escape plan. To ensure the plan is foolproof, he not only prepares thoroughly for the breakout but also uses brief moments during his washing time to communicate with his cellmate next door, attempting to find an ally to carry out the plan together. However, just as he is about to finalize his preparations, he is ordered to face immediate execution. Ultimately, he resolutely embarks on the path of escape with a young inmate boy. The minimalist narrative structure, the confined prison space, and the race against time earned Robert Bresson the Best Director award at the 10th Cannes Film Festival (1957).
