Another body with an unidentifiable identity is discovered. The local police invite special agent Elena Scott (Angelina Jolie) to assist in the investigation, as there has been no progress in the case. Scott's unconventional approach to solving cases frustrates her colleague Picard, but with her keen intuition and extraordinary insight, Scott quickly starts to piece things together: the prime suspect, Martin Ash, has been living other people's lives for 20 years, assuming the identities of his victims after each crime to begin a new life.
