The film is adapted from the novel by John le Carré, author of "The Tailor of Panama." The story takes place in contemporary Hamburg, Germany. A mysterious man comes to the local Muslim community seeking help. He is of half Chechen and half Russian descent and has sustained serious injuries. His purpose for coming here is to recover his father's substantial illegal earnings. Those around him express skepticism about his identity. Is he a victim, a thief, or worse, someone with extremist terrorist motives? Also involved in this matter are a British banker and a young female lawyer. Meanwhile, a seasoned German spy is constantly monitoring them, trying to uncover what the mysterious man really intends.
