Recently, there have been frequent jewel thefts in the city, and the police are at a loss. The thief's methods closely resemble those of the infamous former burglar "The Cat" John (Cary Grant), so the police seek out John, who is living a relaxed life in his countryside villa. John, of course, is not easily swayed; after escaping the police, he begins to investigate who is using his techniques to commit these crimes. With no leads, John turns to his former ally Mr. Barris, but is met with hostility from the patrons at Mr. Barris's restaurant. Fortunately, with the help of the server’s daughter, John arrives at Cannes Beach. With the assistance of an insurance company manager, John launches his plan to catch the thief.
