This film is the most expensive in Turkish history, with a production cost of $17 million. The film is based on the historical siege of the Byzantine capital, Constantinople, by Sultan Mehmed II in 1453. Production began in 2009 and lasted for 3 years. In 1453, the Byzantine capital, Constantinople, was besieged by Turkish invaders. Due to the gradually empty treasury of the empire, Constantinople was merely a shadow of its former glory, while the Turkish Empire was becoming increasingly powerful. After enduring many years under the Byzantine Empire, the ambitious Sultan Mehmed II (played by Devrim Evin) initiated the campaign to end the Byzantine Empire. He led cavalry and warships to conquer the Byzantine capital, Constantinople, thus ending over a thousand years of Eastern Roman rule, and in the name of the Turks, conquered Constantinople, establishing the Ottoman Empire as a transcontinental nation where Eastern and Western civilizations converged.
