The story takes place in a kingdom called Mahishmati, where a fierce battle for the throne is raging between Baahubali (played by Prabhas) and Bhallaladeva (played by Rana Daggubati). Baahubali is honest and brave, believing that he must earn the throne through his true strength, while Bhallaladeva, on the contrary, is cunning and ruthless, willing to do anything to get what he desires. Ultimately, the just Baahubali becomes king, but Bhallaladeva carries out an assassination plot to seize power. Baahubali's son ends up in the streets and is adopted by a kind family, who names him Shiva (played by Prabhas). After growing up, Shiva learns of his heritage and the royal blood that flows in his veins; he decides to overthrow the tyrant and reclaim his rightful throne.
