Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) is a top producer for CBS's "60 Minutes," and has always worked closely with esteemed host Mike Wallace (Christopher Plummer). Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe) has just been fired by a major tobacco company, and his life seems to be spiraling downward. Bergman receives a report showing that cigarettes produced by the tobacco company are harmful to health and seeks out Wigand to translate it. However, from this moment on, Wigand feels that someone is tracking him, posing a significant threat to his family. The tobacco company reminds Wigand of the confidentiality agreement he signed, stating that he cannot disclose any research related to cigarette production to the public. Wigand does not want to lose health insurance and other guarantees for his family's livelihood, but he is also tormented by his conscience. He ultimately decides to go public about everything, even if it means violating the confidentiality agreement. He first records an episode of "60 Minutes" with Bergman, then heads to Mississippi to testify against the tobacco company.
However, the tobacco company swiftly applies for a gag order, and his wife leaves with their two daughters. "60 Minutes" faces a ban from CBS. The huge cost of all this is overwhelming. Wigand and Bergman become warriors fighting alone, facing their inner sense of justice and courage, and they persist.
