In 1944, the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) came to China to participate in the fight against Japanese aggression, dealing a heavy blow to the Japanese army. In response, the Japanese forces in South China launched the Yuxiangguiz Battle aimed at opening up the mainland transport lines, one of their objectives being to destroy the Southwest Air Force base in China. The Japanese 23rd Army secretly formed a special attack team in South China, planning to carry out a devastating attack on the Yangtang Airport in Guilin. On the night of the attack, the special attack team was ambushed by the Nationalist guard troops at the airport, nearly leading to their annihilation. This highly secret operation was surprisingly known in advance by the Nationalist guard troops, and the Japanese commander Kumamoto, who managed to retreat with some of his team, realized that one of the six Chinese men hired for a large sum was a Nationalist spy. While Kumamoto tried to identify the spy among the three surviving Chinese, Colonel Mike, the American commander at Yangtang Airport, also suspected that something was wrong internally; otherwise, how could the target have been exposed before the ambush began? As Kumamoto hid in Xicun waiting for orders from the headquarters liaison officer, a sense of dread engulfed the three surviving Chinese men, leading to suspicion and speculation among them. After a cursory search by the Nationalist guard troops at the airport, Kumamoto captured a Nationalist officer from the outside. A Chinese man codenamed "Mango" unknowingly fell into Kumamoto's hands while attempting a solo rescue. Just as Kumamoto, frustrated, was preparing to deal with "Mango," a volley of bullets came from the darkness, wounding Kumamoto and killing the other two Chinese on the spot.
