West Africa is still in the post-colonial era, and the French government is eager to withdraw from the continent. Although soldiers are retreating in a hurry, they do not spare Maria's (played by Isabelle Huppert) plantation, as rumors say the rebel leader—a boxer (played by Issach De Bankole)—is hiding there. The war has reached this place, coinciding with the coffee harvest. The Black laborers under Maria have vanished to escape the conflict. Her ex-husband André (played by Christopher Lambert), who once shared the dream of Africa with Maria, has long moved on. André has married a local Black woman, has children, and is secretly planning to sell the plantation. With their home in jeopardy, Maria discovers that her lazy only son Manuel (played by Nicolas Duvauchelle) has shaved his head, is riding a motorcycle, and is clamoring to join the rebels. On this scorching land, it seems that only Maria is left to fight...
