Mario (Yves Montand) is a laid-back hustler in a small town where everyone is looking for work, but no one has a formal job. In this impoverished place, countless people come daily to seek gold, including the down-and-out businessman Gio (Charles Vanel). At the same time, the dying Rouchi (Folco Lulli) and the arrogant Bamba (Peter van Eyck) also appear in the local bar filled with unsavory characters, with one goal in mind: to make money. At this moment, 500 kilometers away, a well of the S•O•C Oil Company is engulfed in flames. To extinguish the fire, someone must drive a truck loaded with ten tons of nitroglycerin to the site. For the company's workers, this is undoubtedly a suicidal act, as even the slightest bump or heat could turn ten tons of nitroglycerin into ten tons of incredibly powerful bombs. The unscrupulous boss targets the hustlers, knowing that even if they die, no union will hold him accountable. Mario, Gio, Bamba, and Rouchi take on this dangerous task, promised $2000 each. Thus, for the sake of money, they embark on a perilous journey where life and death hang in the balance.
