The famous physicist Maya Rizo (played by Minami Bantaro) comes from a family with a terrifying legend: anyone who sees the Rainbow Man ultimately meets an untimely death. Despite this, Rizo remains dedicated to his research on creating artificial rainbows. One day, a fire breaks out at Rizo's wooden villa in the mountains, and his disciple Sugawara Hachiro is confirmed to have perished in the disaster. However, investigations reveal that Sugawara was stabbed to death before the fire. Eventually, Rizo's wife, Shimako (played by Hirai Kiyoko), and her niece, Kobata Yurie (played by Wakasugi Sumiko), become suspects and are arrested by the police. A female journalist from Showa Daily, Torikai Mimi (played by Akatsuki Teruko), does not believe her friend Yurie could be a murderer, and she accompanies the police to visit the mysterious and secretive Maya family.
