A pair of girls, Victoria De Santos (played by Megan Charpentier) and Lily De Santos (played by Isabelle Nélisse), have their mother killed by their father, who subsequently commits suicide, leaving the two daughters abandoned in the woods. Five years later, when they are discovered, they are in extremely poor condition—lonely and hungry—and they feel fear and resistance at any physical contact. No one knows how they survived in such an isolated environment. Their uncle Lucas (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (played by Jessica Chastain) adopt them, shattering their previously quiet life. In the darkness, there is a haunting presence that wants to destroy them, and the two girls call this ghost: Mom. This film is the feature-length directorial debut of Spanish director Andrés Muschietti, adapted from his 2008 short film of the same name.
