After the hurricane in Orleans, the entire city is paralyzed. In the local prison, all the guards and inmates have been evacuated, yet one prisoner is forgotten here. Officer Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) discovers him while patrolling the cells, and Terence steps in to help. This brave act earns him a promotion to lieutenant, but he also suffers severe spinal injuries, leaving him in need of medication to manage the pain. The ever-intensifying pain makes various medications ineffective, and Terence endures torment throughout this process, ultimately resorting to drugs, while his physical and financial conditions approach the brink of collapse, and his temper worsens. A heroic cop gradually falls from grace. Soon, a massacre occurs in the city, with drug lord Dufresne being a major suspect. Terence is assigned to investigate the case, during which his long-dormant conscience begins to awaken... This film won the Special Award from the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation at the 2009 Venice Film Festival.
