A completely naked young man squats on a tree trunk by the window in a room, with a blank stare. He is Phoenix (played by Axel Jodorowsky), a patient locked up in a mental hospital. Sickly and reclusive since childhood, Phoenix spent his early years in a circus. His father, Augus (played by Guy Stockwell), is the owner of the circus, and his mother, Gashia (played by Blanca Guerra), is an aerialist. Gashia worships a fetish, and the deity she reveres is a severed-arm girl who was raped and murdered by two brothers. At the site of her blood, people dug a pond and built a church, naming it "Holy Blood." When the priest discovered that what was called Holy Blood was merely red paint, he agreed to the local government's demolition of the church. Gashia led the followers in rebellion. When Gashia found out about Augus's infidelity, she sought revenge, and Augus severed Gashia's arms with a throwing knife and committed suicide. Phoenix was admitted to the mental hospital. Under Gashia's instigation, Phoenix escaped from the hospital and became Gashia's "magic hand."
