"Martha Marcy May Marlene" is based on true events and was nominated for the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section in 2011. The film received critical acclaim after its premiere at Sundance and is considered the "Winter's Bone" of 2011. Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), a young girl, falls into a cult, is brainwashed by the leader Patrick (John Hawkes), and is "raped" in the name of religious rituals. After a struggle, she escapes the cult's control. She then finds her sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and begins a new life with her sister and brother-in-law Ted (Hugh Dancy), choosing to remain silent about the events of her past disappearance. In her seemingly normal and calm daily life, Martha strives to forget her painful past.
