Senator Ransom "Rance" Stoddard (played by James Stewart) returns to a small town with his wife Hallie (played by Vera Miles) to attend the funeral of an old friend, Tom, with whom they share a friendship that dates back many years...Young lawyer Ransom is robbed on the way to the town by a gang of thugs led by Liberty Valance (played by Lee Marvin). Injured, Ransom is taken in by a local couple who run a restaurant and meets their daughter Hallie, as well as Tom (played by John Wayne), who loves Hallie. The townspeople are also suffering under the oppression of Liberty and his gang. Ransom begins to use his knowledge to inspire the locals, hoping to bring Liberty to justice through legal means. Meanwhile, Tom repeatedly urges Ransom to leave the town. Tensions culminate during an election, leading Ransom and Tom to unite against Liberty.
