Zhu Hongli (played by Sammo Hung) is a small worker in a paper effigy shop, raised by his Taoist uncle (played by Lam Ching-ying) since childhood. Although Zhu Hongli hasn't mastered much of the Taoist arts and occasionally behaves awkwardly, he has a righteous heart and often gives the cold shoulder to his betrothed, Ah Yun (played by Cherie Chung), to avoid dragging her down. His friend Ma Lixiang (played by Wu Ma) ventures out into the world but returns home as a corpse, along with Ma Lixiang's pregnant wife and several male companions. Zhu Hongli senses something is amiss and investigates but finds nothing. A few days later, Ma Lixiang's vengeful spirit seeks Zhu Hongli's help. It turns out that Ma Lixiang was not dead upon returning home; he conspired with others to steal his family’s ancestral burial goods but unexpectedly met his demise at the hands of his accomplices. Discouraged, Zhu Hongli finally succumbs to the spirit's hauntings and asks his uncle for help to avenge his friend, only to lose his own body and life in the process. Devastated, Ah Yun, guided by her uncle, attempts to outsmart the ghostly messengers to reclaim Zhu Hongli's soul…
