Samantha (Kate Mara) is a reporter for her high school's newspaper. She gets blacklisted from attending the homecoming festival after reporting on a scandal involving the school team, and her two friends, Gina and Mindy (Olesya Rulin), also suffer the consequences. The three girls, with nothing to do, gather to tell stories to pass the time. They first recount the legend of a girl named Mary, a goody-two-shoes who was murdered by a member of the school team in Salt Lake City in 1969, and then mention the terrifying "Bloody Mary." After this, the three girls mysteriously disappear, only to reappear the next day in an abandoned factory in the suburbs.
