Sailor Michael O'Hara (played by Orson Welles), who has murdered before in Spain, returns to New York. One night, he saves a beautiful woman, Elsa (played by Rita Hayworth), from being robbed. As a result, Elsa has her husband, lawyer Arthur Bannister (played by Everett Sloane), find Michael and invite him to work as a sailor on their ship.
