Ward's younger brother, Jack Jansen (Zac Efron), a retired swimmer, becomes their driver. Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman) loves writing letters to inmates; this time, she falls in love with Hillary, and they correspond frequently. Ward and Yardley seek out Charlotte to assist with their investigation. The group begins visiting Hillary in prison regularly, while Jack, in his adolescence, develops an intense crush on the sexy and alluring Charlotte. Ultimately, the investigation concludes with Hillary being exonerated, and he takes Charlotte away from Jack back to his home in the woods. However, Charlotte discovers this is not the life she wants, but Hillary won't let her leave... This film is adapted from the novel by American author Pete Dexter.
