Robot Johnny Five does completely different things compared to other robots, such as Terminators, Transformers, and RoboCop. Johnny Five is neither a machine overlord wanting to dominate the Earth nor a machine slave at the mercy of humans. He refuses to acknowledge himself as an object or even a machine. He boldly declares, "I am a life form too," yearning for human acceptance. He strives to learn from humans and approaches them in various ways. To this end, he wears clothes and goes to church to ask the priest about the mystery of the soul. Johnny Five is innocent, kind-hearted, eager to help, and naive like a child. He wholeheartedly assists his creator Benjamin in producing toys and even helps him in his romantic pursuits. However, this also makes him particularly vulnerable to exploitation by bad people. At first, he helps a thief "obtain" the sound system from a car, and later he assists Oscar in "retrieving" diamonds from the bank vault, to the point of being beaten nearly to death by Oscar's gang. But when he realizes he has become an accomplice to the villains, he, like all human heroes, risks his life to bring the criminals to justice. In the end, Johnny Five is accepted by the U.S. government and becomes a U.S. citizen. Johnny Five shows us another kind of relationship between humans and robots: friendship. Johnny Five is the type of robot that humanity desires: intelligent, kind, yet appearing fragile. His relationship with humans is one of equality, without the issue of one enslaving or dominating the other; they are friends who assist and benefit each other.
