The last dwarven kingdom in Middle-earth, Erebor, stands majestic and grand. The old king Thorin amassed a great wealth, which attracted the covetous dragon Smaug and led to the city's downfall. Many years later, the Grey Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) finds Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), the uncle of Frodo, and invites him to join a company of 13 dwarves. It turns out that Smaug has been dormant for many years, and the dwarven prince Thorin (Richard Armitage), bearing the grudge of his homeland, wishes to reclaim it. After some consideration, Bilbo decides to join. Little does he know, the journey is fraught with peril, haunted by the pale half-orc and his minions, not to mention the numerous dangers posed by trolls and stone giants. Along the way, Bilbo unexpectedly comes into possession of a significant treasure that will impact all of Middle-earth... This film is adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's original work of the same name.
