The year is 1979, in an ordinary small town in Ohio, USA. Young Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney) is devastated by the loss of his mother, and the grief keeps him silent for a long time. Months later, he accepts an invitation from his good friend Charles (Riley Griffiths) to gather a few friends to film a horror movie using a Super 8 camera (8 mm). What truly motivates him is that the beautiful girl he has a crush on, Alice (Elle Fanning), is also involved. One night, Alice drives the group to a train station to shoot, only to witness a horrific train accident. This incident is just the beginning of a series of unusual events; people in the town start to mysteriously disappear, and strange occurrences unfold.
