After the battle with the Green Goblin, Spider-Man Parker (Tobey Maguire) painfully rejects his only love, Mary (Kirsten Dunst), because his identity as Spider-Man brings great danger to himself and his loved ones. Parker decides to independently take on the responsibilities of being Spider-Man. Parker is busy dealing with various challenges: learning to skillfully utilize his superpowers; hiding his true self under the dual identity of a superhero and an ordinary college student, and living cautiously. Parker finds it increasingly difficult to let go of Mary, but as Spider-Man, he cannot open his heart to her.
