Living in a mountain valley, Jiu Xiang (played by Song Chunli) is an illiterate old woman whose father gave her a name derived from traditional Chinese medicine. Having never attended school, the old woman looks at a photo of herself taken at the age of 19, and she unintentionally reflects on the past. She was so beautiful, like the little flowers blooming on the hillside. However, her fate is as tragic as the bitter Huanglian herb. A heavy snowstorm collapsed her house and killed her husband. Her five children cried loudly, and the unfortunate woman took on the heavy responsibility of supporting her children alone. During the long and arduous journey, her husband's old friend Lao Guan began to help her manage household affairs. In times of adversity, emotions are particularly genuine.
