Young woman Michelle (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) recently had a fight with her boyfriend. She is driving on a dark highway at night when she suddenly gets into a serious car accident and falls unconscious. When she wakes up again, she finds herself tied up and locked in a confined space. Shortly after, a strong and stern man named Howard (played by John Goodman) enters. A former soldier, Howard claims that the Earth has just experienced a terrible biochemical crisis that has nearly wiped out humanity. He built this well-equipped shelter years in advance just to survive. Inside the shelter, besides Howard and Michelle, there is another young man named Emmett.
