Ben Campbell (played by Jim Sturgess) has extraordinary talent. As a top student at MIT, his academic record is impeccable, and he has unsurprisingly received an acceptance letter from Harvard Medical School. However, the exorbitant tuition and living expenses of $300,000 threaten his college dreams. During a scholarship interview, a professor tells him that winners must have outstanding experiences, not just be a blank slate like Ben. Ben works part-time at a clothing store, earning $8 an hour. At the same time, he and two friends prepare for a competition with a goal of achieving 2.09 in hopes of gaining recognition and a prize. In math class, Ben's genius is noticed by Professor Mickey Rosa (played by Kevin Spacey), who hopes Ben will join his 21-counting team to win big at casinos. Ben is initially resistant, but when Jill Taylor (played by Kate Bosworth), the girl he has secretly loved, also tempts him, he begins to waver. Ben undergoes rigorous training, and the success he achieves brings him the power of money, vanity, and desire. Meanwhile, he begins to grow distant from his old friends and gradually gets lost in the whirlpool of the casinos.
