In an unfinished painting, the people within it establish a hierarchical society, where fully painted beings discriminate against the unfinished and disregard the line-drawn characters. The castle of the Land of Paint is controlled by the Candle Emperor, who drives the unfinished and line-drawn people into the forest. Fully painted Lamo and unfinished Claire fall in love, but are pursued by the Candle Emperor. By chance, Lamo encounters Claire's friend Lola and the line-drawn character Blum, and the three of them are chased into the Cannibal Forest. They decide to seek the missing painter to complete the unfinished painting and add color to the unfinished and line-drawn characters. Along the way, they fall out of the painting into the painter's studio. They encounter an enchanting lady lounging by the window, the grumpy self-portrait of the painter, and a fast-talking blue clown. They traverse between paintings, run through the Carnival of Venice, and face the pursuit of Death, ultimately returning to the studio. Although they do not find the painter, they gain the skills to paint. On the other side, Claire is captured, the unfinished and line-drawn characters are taken as laborers, and the Candle Emperor is preparing a ritual. The return journey for Lamo and his companions, who have obtained paint and skills, is fraught with dangers. Can he ultimately bring color to the unfinished and line-drawn characters?
