In the near future, the Earth's environment is gradually deteriorating. Mysterious alien colonizers are sending massive, cold-blooded monsters, hidden with deadly toxins, to Earth through "breaches" at the bottom of the ocean, methodically implementing their plans for colonization and destruction. In response, humanity joins forces to create the "Mako Project," developing mecha warriors comparable in size to the monsters. However, as the monsters continue to evolve, the mecha warriors face total defeat. World leaders attempt to build a defensive "Wall of Life" to block the invaders, but soon encounter setbacks. At this critical juncture, General Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) discreetly advances the "Mako Project" by retrieving the heavily traumatized pilot from five years ago, Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), and carefully selecting a new partner, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), through rigorous scrutiny.
