12-year-old girl Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) has a violent fascist officer stepfather, Vidal (Sergi López). Vidal's mission is to suppress rebels, researching various torture devices to torment and harm captured dissidents. Ofelia witnesses unpleasant events every day. Seeing her ruthless stepfather and his cohorts commit evil deeds for pleasure, while her mother is ill and pregnant, Ofelia, troubled by loneliness and the pain of witnessing atrocities, begins to immerse herself in her own fantasies for comfort. One day, Ofelia encounters the guardian of the labyrinth, the Faun (Doug Jones). The Faun tells her that she is actually the lost princess of a fantasy kingdom, and to reclaim her identity, she must pass three dangerous trials.
