When U.S. Navy Captain Nelson (played by Walter Pidgeon) leads the submarine Sea View in polar exploration, a crisis suddenly arises on Earth: the atmosphere is engulfed in a massive fire, causing the planet to heat up rapidly, leading to severe drought and turning Earth into a hellish inferno. Scientists disagree on how to address the situation, and Nelson decides to launch a nuclear missile from the Sea View, aiming for it to explode outside the atmosphere in hopes of extinguishing the fire and cooling the planet. To expedite a solution, Nelson resolutely allows the crew to choose whether to stay on the ship or continue forward, but with no other options available worldwide, they must adhere to Nelson's plan...
