In the year 2020, the World Space Station, gathering numerous top scientists, is conducting a manned spacecraft Mars landing program. A team of four led by Luke Graham (played by Don Cheadle) successfully arrives on this uninhabited planet, where they discover some strange phenomena, followed by the successive deaths of team members. To investigate the cause of this tragedy and search for possible survivors, the space station dispatches a rescue team led by Woody Blake (Tim Robbins) to Mars. However, the rescue team encounters numerous hardships, including hull damage, mechanical failures, fuel leaks, and member fatalities, all of which wear down the resolve of the rescuers.
