Charlie (played by Cliff Robertson) is a 30-year-old adult man who behaves like a 6-year-old child due to an intellectual disability. During the day, he works as a janitor at a bakery, earning a meager salary to support himself. This job is not only very hard but also subject to ridicule and bullying from his peers. At night, Charlie attends classes at night school, where his teacher Alice (played by Claire Bloom) is very kind to him. To help Charlie with his condition, Alice contacts neurologists Richard (played by Leon Janney) and Anna (played by Lilia Skala) who specialize in brain experiments. Charlie becomes their experimental subject, and to everyone's surprise, the treatment is incredibly effective; he not only completely recovers but also gains a remarkably high IQ.
