"Monster" describes a good student, played by Deng Yukai, who is constantly bullied by a trio of popular students in his class. One day, the four of them accidentally discover a humanoid monster that eats people, which leads to the theme of "bullying." This theme has been something Giddens Ko wanted to explore ever since he was inspired by the Swedish film "Evil" over a decade ago. Initially, he planned to make a low-budget "mockumentary" about bullying for 15 million NT dollars, but later transformed it into a narrative special effects film. Not only was it shot at Central Motion Picture Corporation, but they also specifically blocked off streets in Ximen for action scenes, raising the production cost to 100 million NT dollars, with most of the budget going to special effects. Giddens Ko revealed that the original idea was to take a realistic violent approach, but he and the amateur actors struggled with that, so they ultimately decided to revert to a style of black humor.
