In the mid-21st century, due to the greenhouse effect, glaciers in the North and South Poles melted, submerging many cities on Earth. At this time, human technology had advanced to a high degree, and artificial intelligence robots were one of the technological means invented by humanity to cope with harsh natural environments. Moreover, robot manufacturing technology had also become highly advanced—these sophisticated robots not only possessed lifelike human appearances but could also perceive their own existence. Monica's son, Martin, was seriously ill and hospitalized, his life hanging by a thread. To alleviate her heartache, she adopted a robotic child named David (portrayed by Haley Joel Osment), whose mission for existence was to love her. Martin awoke, recovered, and returned home, but a series of events led to David losing favor and ultimately being abandoned by Monica. After narrowly escaping the brutal pursuit of a robot slaughterhouse, David, with the help of his robot lover, Joe (portrayed by Jude Law), begins to search for his own value of existence: longing to become a real child and return to his mother, Monica. No one knows if he will fulfill his wish and transform into a true human being; all that awaits them is an unpredictable journey...
