Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve travels to Vietnam to uncover the story behind our morning pick-me-up. How many people in the UK, who consume millions of cups of coffee each week, actually know where their coffee comes from? The answer is not Brazil, Colombia, or Jamaica, but Vietnam! Eighty percent of the coffee consumed by the British is not cappuccino or latte, but instant coffee, and Vietnam is their largest supplier. Thirty years ago, Vietnam's coffee production accounted for only a small part of the global total, but after the Vietnam War, the government decided to mass-produce coffee. Now, Vietnam is the second-largest coffee producer in the world. The coffee industry provides jobs for millions and has helped a few individuals rise from nothing to become millionaires. However, Simon also discovers that the rapid development in Vietnam has taken a heavy toll on local residents and the environment.
