The impoverished girl Griet (Scarlett Johansson) comes to work as a maid in the house of the painter Vermeer (Colin Firth). Vermeer lives with his wife and mother-in-law, who often exhibit an authoritative demeanor, especially the wife who is very wary of the youthful Griet.
