In 1760, at the Liverpool docks, the Collins couple is boarding a ship bound for the New World with their young son, Barnabas, to expand the Collins family empire. Sixteen years later, Barnabas (played by Johnny Depp) grows up, inherits the family business, and resides at Collinwood Manor. The witch Angelique (played by Eva Green) pursues him, but Barnabas is devoted to the kind-hearted Josette (played by Bella Heathcote) and coldly rejects the witch. Angered and humiliated, the witch curses them, and Josette dies tragically, while Barnabas is transformed into an immortal vampire and trapped in a coffin.
