The story takes place just after the end of World War II, when everything was in disarray. Soldier Charles (played by Van Johnson) decides to stay in Paris after completing his mission as a soldier, aiming to enter the artistic world and become a writer. In Paris, Charles meets the sisters Helen (played by Elizabeth Taylor) and Marian (played by Donna Reed), and soon he falls in love with Helen. They marry and have a child together. Although his romantic life is smooth sailing, Charles's career struggles to take off, and he becomes disheartened when he fails to achieve success. He begins to rely on alcohol to cope with his inner turmoil. One day, in a drunken stupor, Charles locks Helen outside, resulting in her contracting pneumonia and tragically passing away. Marian takes their child away, and Charles loses everything.
