During the Republic of China period, in a remote mountainous area far from the hustle and bustle of war, there stood a humble and ordinary school. The principal Sun Henghai (played by Dali) lives here with his daughter Sun Jia (played by Bu Guanjin) and several teachers with various blemishes: Pei Kuishan (played by Pei Kuishan), Zhang Yiman (played by Ren Suxi), and Zhou Tienan (played by Liu Shuailiang). They are open-minded and optimistic but troubled by their hard life, so they report a donkey in the yard as a teacher to draw a salary without working. However, one day, the principal learns that the education department is sending an inspector for evaluation, and in a moment of panic, a blacksmith (played by Aruna) unexpectedly appears like a lifesaver. They implore the blacksmith to disguise himself as a teacher, but can everything truly go smoothly and be covered up? The film is adapted from the namesake play by Zhou Shen and Liu Lu.
