Ambitious yet unsuccessful cartoonist John struggles in New York. Upon learning that his mother is ill, he is compelled to return to his hometown, a place he has tried to escape from forever, with his 8-month pregnant girlfriend Rebecca (played by Anna Kendrick). Back in the city where he grew up, he must care for his sick mother with his family, whom he hasn't seen for a long time, while also dealing with the emotional intricacies of his high school love rival, his overly enthusiastic ex-girlfriend. As he reconnects with his family, he slowly realizes that he is not the only one facing challenges in work, love, and life; his father's small company is on the brink of bankruptcy, his elder brother is still entangled with his ex-wife after a divorce, and his mother's illness appears to be quite serious. Each member of the Hollars family faces their own life crises, with no escape, forcing them to confront all these issues.
