The story takes place in 1930s Paris, where the economic downturn has plunged everyone into financial crisis, leading the once-thriving entertainment industry to the brink of collapse. A down-and-out woman named Victoria (played by Julie Andrews) is discovered by Tod (played by Robert Preston) in a chance encounter. Tod is drawn to her charismatic demeanor and convinces her to impersonate a male, then dress as a woman in her male persona to satisfy certain people's preferences. Thus, Victoria debuts under the name of Victor, and to her surprise, her androgynous image quickly becomes a sensation throughout the city. Even the nightclub mogul Carroll (played by James Garner) finds himself deeply attracted to Victor and cannot understand how this "man" has so exquisitely mimicked femininity.
