Benny (Aidan Quinn) works at an auto repair shop. He has a mentally challenged sister, Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), who is a constant source of worry for him. To take care of his sister, Benny remains single, as he does not want to send Joon to a specialized care facility. One day, Benny and Joon encounter an unexpected visitor—Sam (Johnny Depp), a distant relative of Benny's friend. This Sam behaves oddly; he can make tricks with bread in a bar and mimics scenes from classic films to entertain everyone. Therefore, Benny invites him to be his sister's caretaker. As they spend time together, the two young people gradually form a special bond. Meanwhile, Benny meets his love interest, Ruthie (Julianne Moore), but his sense of responsibility towards his sister makes him hesitant about the relationship.
