The story takes place in early 18th century England, where Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) is the ruler of Great Britain. She has maintained a secret romantic relationship with her childhood friend, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz). Abigail (Emma Stone) is a distant relative of Sarah, who aspires to integrate into the upper class represented by royalty.
