In a town in Texas, Sheriff John T. Chance (played by John Wayne) and Deputy Dude (played by Dean Martin), a drunkard, bring the notorious Joe Burdette to justice and lock him up in jail, where they are joined by the limping officer Stumpy (played by Walter Brennan) to wait for the arrival of the commissioner a few days later. At this moment, Chance's old friend Pat Wheeler happens to pass through and introduces Chance to a boy named Colorado Ryan (played by Ricky Nelson).
