During the Republic of China era, Ma Bangde (played by Ge You), who bought the position of county chief, arrives in office with his wife (played by Liu Jianling) and attendants. While passing through a certain place in southern China, they are ambushed by a gang led by Zhang Mazi (played by Jiang Wen), resulting in the death of all the attendants, with only the couple managing to survive.
