In 1964, the accountant at the French Embassy in China, Gaoren Ni (Jeremy Irons), was captivated by the butterfly lady on stage while watching an opera. After the show, he took the initiative to befriend Song Liling, the Peking opera actress who played the butterfly lady. Repeated encounters brought the two lonely hearts together in love. However, the good times did not last long; with the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution, Song Liling vanished without a trace. In 1968, she arrived in France for a reunion with Gaoren Ni. Years later, when Gaoren Ni was accused of being a spy, it was Song Liling, dressed in a suit, who stood in the witness box. Gaoren Ni, who was identified as a woman, became a laughingstock throughout France. How will these two men confront each other and face their love?
